Scottish Gaelic Language

Scottish Gaelic, sometimes also referred to as Gaelic, is a Celtic language native to Scotland. A member of the Goidelic branch of the Celtic languages, Scottish Gaelic, like Modern Irish and Manx, developed out of Middle Irish, and thus is ultimately descended from Old Irish.

Scottish Gaelic and Irish are closely related. While most dialects are not immediately mutually comprehensible, speakers of the two languages can rapidly develop mutual intelligibility.

Scottish Gaelic is not an official language of the European Union or the United Kingdom.

57,375 people (1.1% of the Scottish population aged over three years old) in Scotland could speak Gaelic at that time.
